FAMILY TIES PROJECT

Protecting the Bond Between Parents and Children Affected by Incarceration
In Collaboration with Mothers Bail Bond | California-Based Initiative

Because Family Belongs at the Center—Not on the Sidelines

Incarceration shouldn’t mean erasure. The Family Ties Project exists to protect and preserve family relationships during and after incarceration. Through legal advocacy, policy support, and one-on-one guidance, we help incarcerated parents stay connected to their children and defend their right to be involved—even from behind bars.

Partnering with Mothers Bail Bond, our work is rooted in dignity, justice, and the belief that families are stronger when they stay together.

Our Purpose

Every year, thousands of parents in California’s prison and jail system are separated from their children—sometimes permanently. Many are unaware of their rights or lack the tools to remain part of their child’s life. Family Ties steps in with legal resources, caregiver education, and policy advocacy that empowers parents to maintain meaningful, lasting relationships with their children.

Real Impact, Real Voices

“I thought losing my parental rights was automatic. Family Ties helped me fight back—and win a second chance to be a father.”
– Formerly Incarcerated Parent, Oakland CA

What We Provide

  • Legal Support for Incarcerated Parents
Know your rights. We help parents understand and assert their legal standing in custody cases, dependency hearings, and family reunification plans.

  • Family Unity Advocacy
We challenge harmful practices that weaken family bonds and support policies that keep parents and children connected throughout incarceration.

  • Caregiver & Guardian Resources
We assist caregivers and relatives raising children with an incarcerated parent—providing guidance, emotional support, and access to state benefits.

  • Post-Release Family Reintegration
We help formerly incarcerated parents reconnect with their children through structured support, court navigation, and co-parenting guidance.

  • System Navigation Workshops
Know what to expect and how to advocate. We offer free workshops to help families understand CPS processes, court timelines, and visitation laws.
